How a tray is made.

Nine steps, every one of them ours, photographed on our own floor.

01Fiber arrives from Korea — Shyne X premium series, sealed cartons by diameter — and is stored by diameter and colour, drawn against your order rather than bought per job.

02Diameter is measured on the incoming fiber before anything is cut: a 0.15 bundle reads 0.151 mm on the gauge.

03The fiber is pressed flat in the plate and taped down — that is what gives a row the same thickness end to end.

05It is cut to length: one strip is one row of the tray.

06Each strip is wound onto a rod by curl — C, CC, D and the rest — and heat-set; that is what stops a curl relaxing in the box.

07The rows are set onto the tray card and the card goes into its gold-rimmed case; every tray is checked by hand against your approved sample and labelled by curl.
